On July 28, Ukraine launched three attacks on Russian territory in what appears to be an attempt to deflect from the failure of its counter offensive.
Russian air defenses shot down a Ukrainian drone trying to attack facilities near the capital, Moscow, in the morning, according to the Russian Ministry of Defense.
“This morning, the Kiev regime attempted to carry out a terror attack, sending an unmanned aerial vehicle to attack facilities on the territory of the Moscow Region. Air defense forces shot it down,” the ministry said.
The ministry added in its statement that the failed drone attack caused no damage or casualties on the ground in the capital.
Later in the afternoon, Ukraine attacked a residential area close to Taganrog in the Rostov region with a Soviet-era S-200 anti-aircraft missile converted into a strike version.
“The Ukrainian missile was detected and intercepted in the air by Russian air defense systems,” the Russian MoD said in a statement, adding that “the wreckage of the shot Ukrainian missile fell on the territory of Taganrog.”
Several buildings in Taganrog were damaged as a result of the attack. Rostov governor Vasily Golubev said that at least 15 people received mild injuries from blast fragments, and are now being treated by medics.
Minutes after the first attack on Taganorg, the Russian MoD announced that a second modified S-200 missile was successfully intercepted over Azov in Rostov.
“The wreckage of the downed Ukrainian missile fell in an uninhabited area,” the ministry said in a statement.
The attacks came after the Russian MoD announced the failure of several attacks by Kiev forces in South Donetsk and several other directions.
According to the ministry, Kiev forces attempted to break through the defenses of the Russian military in this direction using heavy engineering and armored vehicles.
The AFU with the 47th Mechanised Brigade reinforced with Western-made tanks attacked the positions of the 71st Motorised Rifle Regiment of the 42nd Motorised Rifle Division of the 58th Army of the Southern Military District and the 810th Marine Brigade of the Black Sea Fleet close to the Rabotino and Uspenovka in the Zaporozhye region. The attack was however repelled by Russian troops.
Ukrainian losses amounted to 180 troops, five tanks, including three German-made Leopard 2s and two French-made AMX-10 RCs, 17 infantry fighting vehicles, 2 armored fighting vehicles, An American-made M777 towed howitzer and a Strela-10 short-range air defense system, according to the ministry.
Photos from the battlefield also confirmed that at least one AMX-10 RC wheeled tank destroyer was captured by the Russian military.
Close to Vremevka salient near Staromayorskoye in the Donetsk region, the Vostok Group of Forces repelled an attack by Ukraine’s 35th Marine Brigade and neutralized a sabotage and reconnaissance group.
Kiev forces lost 110 troops, two infantry fighting vehicles, three armored fighting vehicles, two motors as well as D-20, D-30 and Msta-B towed howitzers.
The situation in other directions, according to the statement of the Russian MoD:
In the Krasny Liman direction, 4 attacks by assault groups of the AFU 67th Mechanised Brigade against the positions of the 228th Motorised Rifle Regiment of the 90th Armored Division have been repelled close to Chervonaya Dibrova (Luhansk People’s Republic).
Assault detachments of the 15th Motorised Rifle Brigade of the 2nd Army continued to develop their success in Svatovo direction and captured a number of AFU strongholds near Sergeevka (Lugansk People’s Republic). The advance into the depth of the enemy defense was 1.5 kilometers.
In addition, to the west of Zhitlovka (Lugansk People’s Republic), detachments of Shtorm 252nd and 752nd motorised rifle regiments of the 20th Army, using the results of a fire attack, have attacked the enemy and advanced 3 kilometers deep into the defense.
As a result of skillful use of modern means of destruction by units of the 21st and 35th motorized rifle brigades of 2nd and 41st armies have suppressed enemy manpower and hardware of 25th airborne, 21st and 67th mechanized brigades, the 100th Territorial Defence Brigade and the 5th Operational Brigade of the Ukrainian National Guard close to Torskoye and Yampolovka (Donetsk People’s Republic), Novovodyanoye, Chervonaya Dibrova and Kremennaya (Lugansk People’s Republic).
The enemy losses were up to 90 Ukrainian servicemen, 2 infantry fighting vehicles, 3 armored fighting vehicles, 3 motor vehicles, 1 Gvozdika self-propelled artillery system and 1 D-30 howitzer.
In the Donetsk direction, the defending units of 7th, 9th and 132nd motorized rifle brigades of 1st and 2nd army corps of the Yug Group of Forces, thanks to a skilfully organized system of fire combined with engineering obstacles, have successfully repelled 7 attacks by enemy assault detachments of 53rd mechanized, 59th motorized infantry and 81st airmobile brigades close to Belogorovka, Zaitsevo, Pervomaiskoye and Vodyanoye (Donetsk People’s Republic).
As a result of actions by aviation and artillery, manpower and hardware of 24th, 28th, 43rd, 110th mechanized, 10th mountain assault, 3rd airborne assault and 77th airmobile brigades of the AFU have been destroyed close to Avdeevka, Konstantinovka, Seversk, Novgorodskoye and Belaya Gora (Donetsk People’s Republic).
In addition, the rotation of AFU units has been disrupted by competent reconnaissance actions and a comprehensive fire attack close to Kleshcheevka (Donetsk People’s Republic).
The enemy losses were up to 260 Ukrainian servicemen, 5 infantry fighting vehicles, 3 armored fighting vehicles, 2 pickup trucks, 8 motor vehicles, 1 U.S.-manufactured M777 artillery system, 1 Akatsiya self-propelled artillery system, and 1 D-20 howitzer.
In the Kupyansk direction, assault detachments of the 7th Motorised Rifle Regiment of the Zapad Group of Forces continued their offensive operations west of Kuzyomovka (Lugansk People’s Republic) and, having completed the task of the day, gained advantageous positions.
In addition, as a result of coordinated actions by Operational-Tactical and Army aviation, as well as artillery, units 14th, 32nd mechanized brigades of the AFU and the 103rd Territorial Defence Brigade have been eliminated close to Stelmakhovka (Lugansk People’s Republic), Sinkovka and Novoosinovo (Kharkov region).
The enemy losses were up to 30 Ukrainian servicemen, 2 armored fighting vehicles, 2 motor vehicles, 1 D-30 howitzer, as well as 2 U.S.-manufacture counter-battery radar stations: AN/TPQ-50 and AN/TPQ-36.
In the Kherson direction, the enemy losses were up to 20 Ukrainian servicemen and 2 motor vehicles.
Operational-Tactical and Army aviation, Missile Troops and Artillery of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation have neutralized 117 AFU artillery units at their firing positions, manpower and hardware in 133 areas.
An enemy rear control point of the Ukrainian group of troops ‘Soledar’, as well as the field control point of the 10th Army Corps of the AFU have been destroyed close to Druzhkovka (Donetsk People’s Republic) and Malaya Tokmachka (Zaporozhye region)
Air defense units have shot down 2 projectiles launched by HIMARS MLRS.
In addition, 17 Ukrainian unmanned aerial vehicles have been intercepted close to Kremennaya (Lugansk People’s Republic), Gorlovka, Soledar, Volnovakha, Novobakhmutovka, Nevelskoye (Donetsk People’s Republic), Tokmak, Ulyanovsk and Energodar (Zaporozhye region), as well as Alyoshki (Kherson region).
In total, 457 airplanes, 244 helicopters, 5,308 unmanned aerial vehicles, 427 air defense missile systems, 11,010 tanks and other armored fighting vehicles, 1,140 fighting vehicles equipped with MLRS, 5,646 field artillery cannons and mortars, as well as 11,939 special military motor vehicles have been destroyed during the special military operation.
All in all, Ukraine appears to be desperate to make any achievement in order to revive its counteroffensive which began nearly eight weeks ago. So far, Kiev forces have sustained heavy losses and failed to make any meaningful gains. In some directions, they even lost territory to the Russian military.
